9/5/15

Hello DIS families,

Thank you for your support in gathering school supplies, filling out back-to-school paperwork, and supervising summer math and reading. We know the start of the school year can be a massive project for parents. We have gotten off to a fantastic start this year. The staff at DIS is committed to working with our families to support our students. Please do not hesitate to contact any of our staff members for assistance.

Meet Delran Township’s Schools New Superintendent- Dr. Brotschul

You are cordially invited to attend the Board of Education meeting on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Board will ratify an employment contract for Dr. Brian Brotschul who is expected to take over the reins of leadership in mid-October. Following the hiring, the Board will recess its meeting for a brief reception for Dr. Brotschul when the public can be introduced to him, learn his biographical information and listen to his plans for running the district, while enjoying some light refreshments and informal conversation. The Board will reconvene its meeting after the reception.

Back to School Nights

Our Back-to-School Nights are being held at 7:00 on the following evenings:

Monday, September 15th- 3rd Grade and Mrs. Bing’s Class

Tuesday, September 16th- 4th and 5th Grades and Miss Roberts’ class

  • 6:45- Building Opens:
    • Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. Rash will be at the main entrance to welcome you to our school.
  • 7:00-8:00 Session 1: (in your child’s classroom)
    • Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Rash and Mrs. Mignogna have prepared a presentation that will be shared with you.
    • Immediately following that presentation, your child’s teacher or teachers will provide an overview of their classroom.
  • 8:05-8:30 Session 2: (special area classrooms, gym or your other child’s classroom)
    • Please use this time to visit our special area teachers or check out the informational tables in the gym. You can also sign up for the PTA at this time.
    • Don’t forget to stop by our library and check out our new computer lab.
    • For parents that may have more than one student, teachers will be available to meet with those parents during this time.

This year, on Tuesday, September 16th, Mr. Dorfman and a representative from Music and Arts will be giving a brief presentation, showcasing available instruments and providing information about instrumental music lessons and band at DIS. The door to the gym will open at 6:15 and the presentation will begin at 6:30. The gym doors will be opened to the main corridor at 6:45 when the front doors open.

Remember that the purpose of the evening is not to discuss your individual student. We will be having parent teacher conferences in just a few short weeks. If you need to discuss your child with his or her teacher, please send the teacher an e-mail or note and they will be happy to reach out to you.

Please be aware that there are no accommodations for supervising your children. It would be greatly appreciated if you could make arrangements for child care at home. Parking will be permitted in the area behind the Delran Professional Center on Rt. 130. Parking on Creek Road is also permitted—on the cemetery side only. Since even with the new parking lot, space is limited, we encourage carpooling. SUV's may park on the grass area in between the two parking lots.

Early Pick-ups

Parents, please remember if you need to pick your child up early, please arrive by 2:30 to sign out in the main office. Otherwise, it is very busy in the main office and you might get delayed in dismissal car lines. Thank you for helping us with this.

Reminder- Beginning of the Year Paperwork

If you have not completed your beginning of the year paperwork, we would greatly appreciate if you could do so and return the forms on Monday. Also, please be sure your emergency contact information is up-to-date on the parent portal. This year, there is a new feature that allows you to select the phone numbers that you would like us to call, opt in to receive text messages (standard text messaging rates apply) and select emails that are used when notifications are sent by the school or district. If your address has changed, you will need to go to our BOE office with two proofs of residency to have the information updated. If you need to delete a contact, please contact the DIS main office.

Breakfast Begins

The breakfast program begins, Monday September 8th. Breakfast can be ordered for the upcoming week or a standing order can be placed.

Please note, if your student(s) was eligible for free or reduced pricing last year, she or he will remain on that status until October 1st. Please call Mrs. Fiorangela Hummel at extension 3027 with questions.

Change to our Nut Policy (This information was included in last week’s Focus, also).

In order to keep all of our learners safe, we have made some changes to the foods that can be in our classrooms. Nuts (tree nuts and peanuts) will continue to be allowed in the cafeteria in all areas except those designated as nut free. ALL classrooms, however, will be nut free. We ask that if your child eats snack at school, please pack a snack that does not have nuts of any kind listed as an ingredient. If you choose to send a birthday treat in for your child, please also choose a treat that does not have nuts listed as an ingredient. We understand and appreciate that this is an inconvenience and we thank you for helping us protect all of our students from potentially life threatening situations.

Birthday Celebrations (This information was included in last week’s Focus, also).

Due to the numerous allergies and our efforts to ensure that our students are safe, we have changed the parameters for celebrating birthdays at DIS. We are asking that any parent or guardian wishing to bring in a snack for their child to share with their class do so on Friday (or the last day of the week). Please be sure to notify your child’s teacher at least three days in advance. If you are unable to notify your child’s teacher in advance, please refer to the approved birthday snack list on the website for items that may be brought in without notice.

PTA Info

The Delran Elementary PTA provides a tremendous service to our students and our school. In the upcoming weeks, you will be receiving information about ways to become involved in the PTA as well as the KidStuff Coupon Books. Please be on the lookout for these items and consider becoming involved.
