FASTT Math Update from Mrs. DeVicaris
As we approach the end of the first trimester, we will be closing down FasttMath on Monday so the teachers can calculate your child’s computational fluency grades. As you recall, students had a goal of completing three sessions per week on FasttMath, and that effort was to count as 5% of your child’s math grade. Because we had some initial issues with the program, the time period that is being checked is October 6th – December 5th , and an average of 2.5 sessions per week will be sufficient for 100% effort. Additionally, we adjusted the proficiency expectations because we know that 169 facts may not have been attainable given the initial start-up issues that shortened our time period. For third and fourth grades, 80 or more fast facts will designate 100% proficiency. In fifth grade, 118 or more fast facts will designate 100% proficiency. In both cases, achieving less than the designated number of facts will be scored as a percentage of the numbers listed above. All of these adjustments were made to benefit your child, and as a direct response to concerns we have heard during the first trimester.
Moving forward, we are excited to introduce an updated version of FasttMath. The most notable improvement is a new dashboard that will let you as the parent see your child’s fact fluency with one quick glance. The students will work in the computer lab next week to become familiar with the new platform, as well as take the initial pretest on their next operation. While we will make FasttMath available to students at home beginning December 15th, students will not be required to complete FasttMath until the week of January 5th.
